How to measure a tree's height

Three methods, none of which need equipment you do not already own. Start with the calculator; the explanations are below it.

Estimate the height

On a sunny day the sun casts every shadow at the same ratio, so something of known height standing near the tree tells you the rest. Measure all three on level ground, within a minute of each other.

That works out to about 60 ft 30–60 ft

1. The shadow method

The most accurate of the three, and the one the calculator above uses. It works because at any given moment the sun casts every shadow at the same ratio to height. Measure something of known height, measure its shadow, and the same ratio converts the tree's shadow into the tree's height.

  1. 1. Pick a sunny day, mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Shadows near noon are too short to measure precisely.
  2. 2. Stand near the tree on level ground and have someone measure your shadow from your heels to the tip.
  3. 3. Measure the tree's shadow from the base of the trunk to the tip, on that same level ground.
  4. 4. Do all three measurements within a minute or two. The sun moves, and so does the ratio.

Sloped ground is the main source of error. If the shadow runs downhill it reads long and the tree looks taller than it is.

2. The pencil method

Faster, less precise, and useful when there is no sun. Hold a pencil at arm's length and walk backwards until the pencil exactly covers the tree from base to top. Without moving, rotate the pencil to horizontal, keeping its base at the trunk, and have someone walk sideways until they stand at the pencil's tip. The distance from the trunk to that person equals the tree's height.

Expect to be off by 10 to 20 percent. That is usually enough to land in the right pricing band, which is all the calculator needs.

3. Reference objects in a photo

If you already have a photo, look for something of known size in the frame and count how many times it stacks up the trunk.

Why the number matters

Height is the single largest factor in what a removal costs, and the price does not rise smoothly with it. Crossing from 60 to 80 feet often means the crew switches from climbing to a lift or a crane, and the quote roughly doubles. Being off by ten feet at that boundary changes your estimate more than any other input.
